What affirming actually means here

It is a word that gets used loosely, so here is the specific version. It means your identity is not the thing being assessed. It means you do not have to spend the first twenty minutes of a 60-minute appointment establishing that you are credible before we can get to why you came.

I especially enjoy working with LGBTQ+ clients, and with anyone who has felt out of place in spaces that prioritize conformity over truth. That is not a marketing line. It is a description of who tends to do well in this practice.

What people usually come in for

Mostly the same things anyone comes in for: anxiety and depression, sleep that has fallen apart, grief, burnout, feeling like you are performing okay and running out of energy to keep it up.

Sometimes there is more specific weight in it. Internal conflict that has been running for years. Religious trauma. Family that is conditional. A major transition, or the anticipation of one. Being tired in a way that has less to do with your brain chemistry than with what the last few years have asked of you.

Not everything is a disorder

Some of what LGBTQ+ people carry is a reasonable response to circumstance, not a diagnosis. Pathologizing it does not help, and neither does refusing to treat something that genuinely needs treatment because naming it feels politically uncomfortable. The work is telling the difference honestly, and that requires actually knowing your situation.

You are not a problem to be solved. You are a person to be understood.

What this practice provides, and what it does not

This is a psychiatric medication management practice for adults. That is the service: evaluation, prescribing where it makes sense, and careful follow-up.

I do not provide psychotherapy, and I am not a gender-affirming hormone provider. Where those are part of what you need, I would rather say so and help you find them than quietly overreach. Working alongside your other providers is normal and welcome.

In person in Spokane, or telehealth across Washington

The Spokane office is at 9631 N Nevada St, Suite 209. Telehealth is available to adults anywhere in Washington. Privacy is a real consideration for some people here, and telehealth from a place you control is sometimes the more workable option. Either is fine.

Insurance

Think Beyond Psych is in-network with most major Washington plans, including Premera Blue Cross, Regence BlueShield, Asuris Northwest Health, First Choice Health, First Health Network, Kaiser, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, and URM. Jesse verifies your specific benefits before the first appointment so you know what to expect rather than finding out afterward. This list is not complete, so if you don’t see your plan, ask anyway and Jesse will check.

We are not able to see patients covered by Medicaid, Apple Health, or other state-funded programs — including as self-pay. This is a federal patient protection rule, not a preference. If that is your coverage, Jesse will gladly help point you toward providers who accept it.

Scope

I do not prescribe benzodiazepines, and I do not treat active substance use, active psychosis, personality disorders, or active crises. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room.

If you have been putting this off because of how the last one went, that is fair.

Request an appointment and Jesse will confirm your insurance and get you scheduled. Ask whatever you need to ask first.

Jesse handles scheduling and insurance verification, Monday–Thursday, 10am–4pm Pacific. You will hear back within one business day.
